Moscow, 25 August (HS). The mystery of the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of Wagner’s private army rebelling against Vladimir Putin in Russia, is not taking its name. It has now come to light that the day before Prigozhin’s death, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus Bek Yevkurov had met Wagner fighters in Libya.

Private Army Wagner fought alongside the regular army of Russia in Russia’s war against Ukraine. In June, Wagner’s chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin, rebelled against Russian President Vladimir Putin and marched towards Moscow with his troops. However, after the mediation of Belarus, they backed down.

On Wednesday, 10 people were killed when a private plane crashed north of the Russian capital Moscow. Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was also aboard the plane. People have different doubts about Prigozhin’s death. People say that there was a conspiracy to kill the Wagner chief.

In the midst of these discussions, the meeting of the Russian Deputy Defense Minister with Wagner fighters in Libya is coming to the fore. In a meeting in Benghazi, Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov told eastern Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar on Tuesday that Wagner’s fighters would report to a new commander, according to a Libyan official with knowledge of the meeting. Also assured that Wagner fighters would remain in the country but under Moscow’s control.

A military meeting following the June uprising was a sign that Moscow had no intention of giving up on the Wagner Group. Now that Prigozhin is dead, the fate of Wagner and the military campaign he built for Russia across Europe, the Middle East and Africa hangs in the balance. However, Wagner has fought several major battles in Ukraine to establish himself. It also fought civil wars and insurgencies in Syria, Libya, the Central African Republic and Mali. During this he also captured gold mines and oil fields.
