Four people, including three Somali security officers, were killed in fighting between al-Shabaab militants and regional forces. Al-Shabaab fighters captured the Gairili military base in Jubaland state, which was recently handed over to Somalia by the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF). Ibrahim Guled Aden, governor of the El Wak district in the southern region of Gedo, confirmed that several people were wounded in the fighting that led to al-Shabaab taking control of the airport.

Adan said, “Al-Shabaab fighters attacked and captured our forces at the Gherili base. They are in full control after defeating our outnumbered forces, but we are trying to regain control of the base.” The Gerile military base, located about 12 km from the Kenyan border, was handed over to Somali security forces on June 29, Xinhua news agency reported.
