STOCKHOLM: The 6-day announcements of the Nobel Prize will start from Monday and it will start with the announcement of the name of the winner of this prestigious award given in the field of medicine. Last year, Swedish scientist Svante Pääbo won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries in human evolution. Neanderthals were actually members of an ancient human group that emerged at least 200,000 years ago, during the Pleistocene era. Neanderthals ranged across Eurasia from the Atlantic regions of Europe east to Central Asia and as far north as present-day Belgium and as far south as the Mediterranean Sea and southwest Asia. This group is believed to be a remarkable example of human adaptation. The Nobel Prize in Medicine was the second award in Svante Pääbo’s family. Pääbo’s father, Sune Bjergström, won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1982.

The name of the Nobel Prize winner will be announced in the field of Physics on Tuesday, Chemistry on Wednesday and Literature on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the winner of this award in the field of economics will be announced on October 9. The awards carry a cash prize of 11 million Swedish kronor (US$1 million). The funds come from a bequest left by the prize’s founder, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1896.

This year the prize money was increased by 1 million kronor due to the falling value of the Swedish currency. Prize winners are invited to receive the prize at a ceremony on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. The prestigious Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo in accordance with Alfred Nobel’s wishes, while the second award ceremony is held in Stockholm.
