Asian Games 2023: India gets historic bronze in men’s canoe doubles 1000 meters


Arjun Singh and Sunil Singh Salam won a historic bronze medal in the men’s canoe 1000m doubles event at the Asian Games on Tuesday, India’s first medal in the sport since 1994. The Indian pair won 3:53. Finished third with a time of 329 seconds. This is India’s second medal in canoe in the history of Asian Games.

India’s Siji Sadanandan and Johnny Rommel had earlier won bronze medals in the same event at the Hiroshima Games in 1994. Uzbekistan’s Shokhmurod Kholmuradov and Nurislom Tukhtasin won the gold medal while Kazakhstan’s Timofey Yemelyanov and Sergey Yemelyanov won the silver medal.

24 year old Sunil, resident of Bishnupur, Manipur, has entered the Asian Games for the second time. 16 year old Arjun is a resident of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh but now lives in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. Sunil said, “Last time also we could have won a medal in this event but it could not happen due to my partner falling ill on the day of the competition.”

Arjun said, “Winning a medal in my first Asian Games is a dream come true. My mother will be very happy.” Both practice under the guidance of head coach Pijush Baroi in Bhopal.
