Big update regarding Gold Hallmark, now hallmarking of jewelery will be mandatory in 55 new districts of the country.


Gold Hallmark: The third phase of mandatory hallmarking of gold jewelery and artefacts has been implemented in 55 districts of 16 states and one union territory. The government gave this information on Friday. Hallmarking as a proof of purity of precious metal was voluntarily implemented till June 16, 2021. After that the government decided to compulsorily implement hallmarking of gold in a phased manner. At present, hallmarking has been made mandatory in a total of 343 districts of the country. The first phase of hallmarking started on June 23, 2021, which covered 256 districts. The second phase started on April 4, 2022 in which 32 more districts were included. Now its third phase has started.

According to the Consumer Affairs Ministry, orders for the implementation of the third phase of mandatory hallmarking of gold jewelery and gold artefacts were notified on September 8. According to the statement, the third phase of mandatory hallmarking of gold jewelery will cover 55 additional new districts in 16 states and one union territory. Under this, eight districts including East Champaran in Bihar, five districts each of Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra and four districts of Telangana have been included. With this, three districts each in Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, while two districts each in Assam, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal will be included. It has also been implemented in Jalore, a district of Rajasthan.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), acting as the nodal agency for hallmarking of gold, has successfully implemented it in the last two phases. Every day more than four lakh gold products are being hallmarked with Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID). The ministry said that since the implementation of mandatory hallmarking, the number of registered jewelers has increased from 34,647 to 1,81,590, while Assaying and Hallmarking Centers (AHCs) have increased from 945 to 1,471.
