China’s President commits to deepen relations with Maldives

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday congratulated Maldives’ newly elected President Mohammed Muizz and expressed his commitment to deepen bilateral relations with Maldives.

People’s National Congress leader Muiz defeated pro-India candidate Ibrahim Mohammad Solih in the presidential election on Saturday. Muizz is a close ally of former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen, who cultivated close ties with China during his tenure as president from 2013 to 2018.

Yameen is currently serving an 11-year jail sentence in a corruption case. Xi said in his message that China and the Maldives have a long history of friendly exchanges, state news agency Xinhua reported.

He said that the two countries not only have a deep friendship, but are also partners for joint development and shared prosperity. The Chinese President said he attaches great importance to the strengthening of bilateral relations and looks forward to working with President-elect Muiz to carry forward traditional friendship and deepen practical cooperation.
