London. European Union Commissioner Thierry Breton has warned Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk that their X platform is being used to spread illegal content and misinformation following the Hamas attacks in Israel.

In a letter addressed to Musk, Breton said that following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel, he has received indications that his platform is being used to disseminate illegal content and misinformation in the EU.

He said the EU Digital Services Act (DSA) sets out precise obligations regarding content moderation.

“You need to be very transparent and clear about what type of content is allowed under your terms and enforce your policies consistently,” Bratton wrote. “This is particularly relevant when it comes to violent and terrorist content being broadcast on your platform.”

The EU Commissioner has asked Musk to send a prompt, accurate and complete response to his request in the next 24 hours.

“You need to take the right measures to deal with the risks to public safety and civil discourse,” Bratton stressed. “Public media and civil society organizations widely report cases of fake images and facts circulating on your platforms in the EU.”

A recent study by the European Union claimed that the proportion of searches for disinformation was the largest in Switzerland.

“My message to X is: You have to follow the law. We’re watching what you’re doing,” Vera Jourova, the EU’s price and transparency commissioner, said last month.
