Gandhi Jayanti 2023: Mahatma Gandhi was born on this day in the year 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. In his honour, this day is celebrated as International Day of Non-Violence across the world. Once when Gandhiji was asked what message he wanted to give to the world, he said, “My life is my message.”

Importance of time: An incident from Gandhiji’s life gives us a deep message about the importance of time. When he was residing in Sabarmati Ashram, some villagers invited him to a meeting in their nearby village. He fixed the time of the meeting, and told everyone the time was four o’clock in the evening. Gandhiji accepted this invitation. But before leaving on time, a person said, “Bapu, I will send you by car to the village, so that you will not face any problem in reaching the meeting place.” Next day Gandhiji waited for the car to reach the meeting on time. But no one arrived till four o’clock. Instead, Gandhiji took a bicycle and reached the meeting place. When people saw him there, they were surprised. Gandhiji showed the importance of time and recognized the unique value of time.

Importance of positive thinking: Mahatma Gandhi believed that ‘We become what we think’. If we have negative feelings about reaching a goal, the same is true in real life. Gandhiji believed that in such situations, we should remove negative thoughts from our mind and keep working hard with only positive thinking. He believed that if a person has faith in himself, he becomes capable of doing anything.

Never give up on difficulties: Mahatma Gandhi had to face many difficulties in his life. Instead of giving up in front of difficulties, he kept trying continuously. In South Africa, when he traveled in a first class train, he was thrown out of the compartment. Despite this, he did not give up and continued to fight to achieve his goal. Despite being jailed several times during the freedom struggle, he continued to fight for India’s independence from the British. Gandhiji’s message was that we should never give up in the face of difficulties.

Importance of peace and patience: When we try to do some work and do not get the results of our hard work, we get upset. Start behaving strangely when angry. However, Gandhiji chose the path of non-violence in his life and by maintaining peace and patience he achieved what he wanted. We should remember that sometimes circumstances are not in our favor or as per our wish, but even at that time we should not lose patience.

Continuity: Mahatma Gandhi used to say, ‘The work you do may be of little importance, but the most important thing is that you keep doing that work’. He advised to learn something new every day, every moment. Gandhiji considered discipline important in his life and maintained discipline at all times, from getting up on time to doing everyday tasks. Along with this, he also explained the importance of saving for tomorrow in one’s life. Gandhiji used to say that the change we want to see in others, we must first bring it within ourselves.
