Hong Kong: After torrential rain overnight in Hong Kong, schools in some parts of the city and underground subway stations were submerged, schools were closed on Friday and the stock exchange also remained closed. The city has been receiving heavy rains since Thursday night, with the government warning that the rain will continue till Friday afternoon. The Hong Kong Observatory said 158.1 mm (6.2 inches) of rainfall was recorded between 11 pm and midnight on Thursday, more than the record set in 1884.

A black rain (torrential rain) warning was issued in Hong Kong on Thursday night and continued into Friday morning. Officials asked the local people living outside to take shelter in safe places. After the torrential rains in the city, many videos are being circulated rapidly on social media, in one video the underground subway station is filled with water and water is seen flowing on the stairs and escalators of the station. Another video showed cars stuck in mud on flooded roads, including the city’s cross-harbour tunnel.

Most of the bus services in the city have been suspended as roads were submerged due to rain. Some parts of the subway network here have also been affected by the rain. Officials announced that daytime classes had been suspended. He urged employees involved in non-essential services not to go to their workplaces. A government statement early Friday said Hong Kong leader John Lee was deeply concerned about the severe flooding across much of the city, and has instructed all departments to provide all possible help. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange did not open for morning trading on Friday and will remain closed in the afternoon if the black rain warning continues till 12 noon.
