In a recent interview filmmaker Ketan Mehta criticized Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019). The director initially talked about starting a film about the Queen of Jhansi with Kangana Ranaut and his research work for the same. Ketan alleged that the final film was much different from his initial estimates.

After the release of the Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer Manjhi – The Mountain Man in 2015, Ketan Mehta announced a film on Rani Laxmi Bai and decided to cast Kangana Ranaut as the Rani of Jhansi. However, things didn’t work out and Kangana opted out of the project, eventually starring in and co-directing Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi.

Now, many years after his project was shelved, Ketan Mehta, best known for films like Maya Memsaab (1993) and Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005), has explained the difference between the two versions.

Kangana’s Manikarnika – The Queen of Jhansi turned chauvinistic and nationalistic. “
