birth and education
Narayan Murthy was born on 20 August 1946 in a middle-class family in Mussoorie city of Karnataka. Narayana Murthy’s father was a school teacher and uncle a civil servant. The economic condition of his family was not particularly good. Narayan Murthy completed his schooling from a government school. His father wanted to follow only one path for Narayan Murthy. But he wanted to become an engineer. After completing his schooling, he appeared for the entrance exam for admission in IIT Kanpur. In this, his admission was done with the approval of scholarship.
Narayan Murthy was not able to meet the expenses of his studies with the scholarship. At the same time his father was unable to pay the fees. Therefore, on the advice of his father, he took admission in a local engineering college ‘National Institute of Engineering’. In the year 1967, he completed his B.E. in Electrical Engineering. Completed graduation with degree. Then in the year 1969, obtained a Masters degree from IIT Kanpur. When he was in IIT, he got a chance to work with a famous computer scientist from America. During this he was greatly influenced by the American scientist. For this reason, he decided to make his career in the field of IT.
Narayan Murthy started his career as a Principal Systems Programmer at IIM Ahmedabad. During that time he established the time sharing computer system. Explain that IIM Ahmedabad became the first business school in India and the third business school in the world after Harvard and Stanford to install time sharing computer system. Narayan Murthy used to work for about 20 hours a day. He still believes that his decision to join IIM was the right one.
He also worked abroad in the 1970s. He spent some years in Paris. Initially Narayan Murthy was a staunch leftist. He supported communism. But later Narayana Murthy changed his views and conclusions in favor of compassionate capitalism and mass creation of employment. He had learned a lot from western countries. He wanted to stay in India and start his own company in his country. He started a company called Softronix. Which failed in a year and a half.
After this he decided once again to become an entrepreneur. In 1981, Narayan Murthy teamed up with six other software professionals to start Infosys Consultants Pvt Ltd with Rs 10,000 from wife Sudha Murthy in Pune. In the year 1983, the headquarters of the company was shifted from Pune to Bangalore. Narayana Murthy became the CEO of this company and from the year 1981 he started working on this post.
In addition Narayana Murthy served as a director on the boards of DBS Bank, Unilever and ICICI Bank. On 14 June 2014, he stepped down from the post of working president. Subsequently, on 11 October 2014, he was designated as Chairman Emeritus. He also served on the strategic board. During this time he advises the National Law Firm, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, on policy, strategic and governance issues.
