Stockholm: The Nobel Foundation on Saturday withdrew its invitation to representatives of Russia, Belarus and Iran to attend this year’s Nobel Prize ceremony following strong criticism. The invitation, sent a day earlier, had evoked strong reactions. Several Swedish lawmakers said on Friday they would boycott this year’s Nobel Prize ceremony in the capital Stockholm, as the private foundation that runs the prestigious awards reversed its stance from a year ago by allowing delegates from the three countries to attend the ceremony. Was invited to join.

The Foundation had said that doing so (inviting) promotes the important messages of the Nobel Prize to reach everyone. Some MPs cited Russia’s war on Ukraine and crackdown on human rights in Iran as reasons for their boycott. Belarus opposition leader Sviatlana Sikhanovskaya on Friday urged Sweden’s Nobel Foundation and the Norwegian Nobel Committee not to invite representatives of the illegitimate regime of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to events.

The foundation said on Saturday that it had “received strong reactions in Sweden, which completely neutralized this message and therefore decided not to invite the ambassadors of Russia, Belarus and Iran to the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm”. However, he said he would follow tradition and invite all ambassadors to the Norwegian capital Oslo for the ceremony where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded.

The announcement on Saturday about the withdrawal of the invitation was widely praised by politicians in Sweden. Even the Swedish Royal House reacted through spokeswoman Margareta Thorgren, saying, “We consider the change of decision positive”, according to the newspaper Aftonbladet. They are planning to hand it over at ceremonies held in Stockholm. This year’s Nobel laureates will be announced in early October.
