Petrol Pumps Selling 20% ​​Ethanol Blended Fuel Will Be Across The Country: Hardeep Puri


Mumbai: Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday said that by 2025, there will be dedicated petrol pumps across the country for retail sale of 20 per cent ethanol blending fuel (E-20). E-20 fuel contains a blend of 20 percent ethanol in gasoline. Addressing the annual general meeting (AGM) of industry body Indian Merchant Chamber (IMC) through a video message, Puri said the first E-20 station became operational on February 8 this year. This targeted time was well before April. Till now their number has crossed 600 and by 2025 they will be in the entire country.

He said the ministry would launch a global bio-fuel alliance this month. The minister said that the blending of ethanol in petrol has increased from 1.53 per cent in 2013-14 to about 11.5 per cent by March, 2023. In volume terms, ethanol blended petrol is expected to increase from 38 crore liters in 2013-14 to 433.6 crore liters in 2021-22. Similarly, the number of petrol pumps selling bio-fuel has almost tripled to 67,640 from 29,890 in 2016-17, he added.

The government aims to have 20 per cent ethanol blending in petrol by 2025. The government has made it 11.5 percent before the targeted time. The government has advanced the target date for blending 20 per cent ethanol in petrol by five years from 2030 to 2025. The target of 10 percent ethanol blending in petrol has also been set before the target in June 2022. Puri said that with increasing crude oil imports from Russia and other non-Gulf markets, the country has also increased the scope of imports. In the financial year 2006-07, there was import from 27 countries, which has increased to 39 in 2023.
