Pew Research’s new survey has exposed the thinking of India and abroad about Modi

Some western countries are not able to digest India’s emergence as an economic power on the global stage because at the international level, since 2014, India has left these western countries behind in terms of GDP.

More recently, an opinion poll has been conducted by a research organization called ‘Pew Research Center’ in 24 countries of the G-20 group, between February 2023 and May 2023, to know that the member countries of the G-20 group What is the influence of India or what kind of opinion do the citizens of the member countries of the G-20 group have about India. In this opinion poll conducted among Indian citizens, the fact has emerged that most Indians have unwavering faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the citizens involved in the opinion poll express their faith in India’s foreign policy at the global level. 68% of Indian respondents say that India has become more influential globally, while 19% of Indians say that the situation has not changed in this regard and only 13% of citizens say that the situation is the same as before. Worse in comparison.

Similarly, regarding India’s leadership at the global level, 79 percent people have described it as beneficial for the country and 55 percent people have described it as highly beneficial. According to him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is representing the country very effectively at the global level. This opinion poll has come at a time when India is presiding over the G-20 group and is currently playing a leading role in following the policies of this group. During the period of one year from November 2022 to November 2023, more than 200 meetings of G-20 group countries are to be organized in India and in this series two meetings of heads of state of G-20 group countries will be held on 9-10 September 2023. The day-long meeting is being organized in New Delhi.

Similarly, the opinion of the citizens of other countries of the world is also visible in the interest of India. About 46 percent of the citizens of other countries involved in the said opinion poll have expressed their good views towards India while expressing satisfaction over India’s leadership. While 34 percent citizens have expressed dissatisfaction with India’s policies and about 16 percent citizens have not expressed their opinion. Opinions of 30,861 citizens of 24 countries have been taken in this opinion poll. The opinion of 2,611 citizens from India has been taken in this poll. However, the total population of the countries of the G-20 group is 470 crores. Russia, China and Turkey have not participated in this opinion poll.

The second question that has been asked in the said opinion poll is whether India’s influence at the global level has increased. 68 percent of Indians said that yes, India’s influence has increased globally, while only 28 percent of citizens from other countries said that India’s influence has increased globally.

The third question was whether you support the policies of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. 79 percent of Indians said yes, while 37 percent of citizens from other countries supported Modi’s policies.

In recent times, India has played a neutral role in this war, not supporting the policies of the member countries of the NATO group in the context of the Russia-Ukraine war. Due to this attitude of India, western countries are looking angry with India’s policies. After this war, especially food and energy have become very expensive in the countries of Europe, which these countries have been getting from Ukraine and Russia, due to which the rate of inflation in these countries has become the highest in the last 50 years. Is. The displeasure of the citizens of these countries in this regard is visible coming out on India. Because, citizens of 3 out of 10 countries in Europe have targeted India’s policies. In a similar poll conducted in France in the year 2007, 29 percent of citizens had made negative comments regarding India, while in the year 2023 this number has increased to 39 percent. In Spain too, in the year 2007, 34 percent citizens had expressed their negative views towards India, which has increased to 49 percent in the year 2023. In Germany too, this figure has increased from 29 percent in the year 2007 to 38 percent in the year 2023. in the United Kingdom from 9 percent in 2007 to 30 percent in 2023 and in Poland from 24 percent in 2007 to 34 percent in 2023.

Some western countries are not able to digest India’s emergence as an economic power on the global stage because at the international level, since 2014, India has left these western countries behind in terms of GDP. In this regard, before the year 2014, India was at the 10th place globally, which has now come at the 5th place, leaving behind the economies of countries like India, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, etc. Now India will overtake Germany’s economy to become the fourth largest economy globally in the next two years. At the same time, the said European countries are still unable to come out of the mindset of colonialism that how India, which has been a colony of the United Kingdom, is moving ahead of them leaving behind the British economy.

Similarly, some resentment towards India has also been found in Latin American countries, though at a comparatively lower level. 33 percent citizens in Mexico, 43 percent citizens in Brazil and 34 percent citizens in Argentina have commented negatively towards India. A surprising 51 percent of citizens in southern Africa expressed dissatisfaction with India. While Brazil and South Africa are also member countries of the ‘BRICS’ group along with India. Argentina is also going to become a member of the BRICS grouping next year. All these countries of India have been leading in the list of friendly countries and India has historical relations with South Africa.

Although the said opinion poll has been done involving very few citizens, but it is giving some impression and there is a need to learn something from it. Therefore, India needs to make its relations with these countries more intense. In America, 51 percent citizens have expressed positive views towards India. In Israel, maximum positive views of 71 percent citizens have been found towards India. During the last 70 years, only in the year 1917, an Indian Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) visited Israel. Since then, India’s relations with Israel have been continuously getting stronger. More recently, the I2-U2 group (India, Israel, USA and UAE) has also been established. Due to these reasons, Israeli citizens have been able to have positive thoughts towards India. While the Prime Minister has visited Brazil and Argentina only once, that too for the BRICS Summit in Brazil and for the G-20 Group meeting in Argentina. Therefore, today there is a great need to establish such strong relations with other countries as well, this lesson is learned from the said opinion poll.
