Sports Ministry approves purchase of pole vault landing pit for Tejaswin Shankar


New Delhi: The Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) of the Sports Ministry has approved financial assistance for the purchase of a ‘pole vault landing pit’ at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here for the preparation of Commonwealth medalist Tejaswin Shankar for the upcoming Asian Games. Shankar, who has qualified for the high jump and decathlon at the Hangzhou Asian Games, will use it alone till the Games starting on September 23.

After that all the players practicing at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will be able to use it. According to a release issued by the ministry, the cost of procuring and bringing it will be borne under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). Besides Tejaswin, the MOC has also approved financial assistance to pistol shooter Rahi Sarnobat to participate in training and competitions in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Rahi will be in Rio from September 2 to 19 to take India to the ISSF World Cup. TOPS will cover his and his physiotherapist Aishwarya Deshpande’s airfare, boarding and lodging, local transport, Rahi’s range and training fees, weapon storage fees, visa and insurance fees. Apart from Rahi, the proposal of shooter Elavenil Valarivan has also been approved for participation in the Rio World Cup.

Rahi and shooter Ambhadya Patil’s training in Europe has also been approved. Table tennis players Swastika Ghosh and Payas Jain will train in Japan for 20 days under the guidance of coach Xian Xian and participate in various tournaments, which has been approved by TOPS.
