Sports Ministry to bear cost of Tejaswin Shankar’s Asiad training equipment


New Delhi: The Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) of the Union Sports Ministry has decided to provide financial assistance to Commonwealth Games medalist Tejaswin Shankar for the purchase of a landing pit for pole vault at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here. The ministry confirmed this on Friday. Tejaswin, who has qualified for the high jump and decathlon events of the Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou from September 22, will exclusively use the pole vault pit till next month. It will be opened for use by all athletes practicing after the Asian Games.

The cost of landing pit (10m x 6.8m x 81m), rain cover for the pit and its delivery will be borne under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). Besides Tejaswin, the MOC also approved financial assistance for the training and participation of pistol shooter Rahi Sarnobat in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Shooter Elavenil Valarivan has been cleared to participate in the ISSF Rio World Cup.

Rahi will train in Rio from September 2, when the Rio Shooting World Cup ends on September 19. TOPS will bear his and his physiotherapist Aishwarya Deshpande’s travel, local transport costs, range and training fees, weapon storage charges, visa and insurance charges and entry fees, among others. Table tennis players Swastika Ghosh and Payas Jain were also allowed to train in Japan for 20 days under coach Qi Xian Xian and participate in several tournaments. Tops will cover the cost of Pius’ participation in WTT Star Contender Skopje, while Swastika will participate in WTT Contender Almaty, WTT Feeder and WTT Feeder Stockholm.
