The government will hand over power to the caretaker government before the completion of its term next month: Shahbaz

Shahbaz said that if his party (PML-N) wins the upcoming general elections, it will change the fortunes of the country.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Sunday that his government would hand over power to a caretaker government before the end of its term next month. The Prime Minister’s statement indicates that the National Assembly is going to be dissolved a few days before the completion of its term. In such a situation, general elections can be held in November. A few days ago the Prime Minister announced that his government would complete its term, which ends on August 13. Shahbaz appears to have taken this decision because of the advice of his ally Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Asif Ali Zardari.

“Zardari, in a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz on Saturday, asked him to dissolve the National Assembly a few days before the end of the government’s term, so that elections could be held in November,” a senior PPP leader said on Sunday. Under the constitution, if the National Assembly completes its term, elections must be held within 60 days. But if the assembly is prematurely dissolved, the government will get 90 days to hold elections. The five-year term of the National Assembly began with Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf coming to power on August 12, 2018, and is set to end with the Shahbaz-led ruling coalition.

Addressing the laptop distribution ceremony in Sialkot, Shahbaz said, “Our government will complete its term next month. We are hopeful that we will hand over power before the end of the term and a new interim government will take over.” Shehbaz said that if his party (PML-N) wins the upcoming general elections, it will change the fortunes of the country.
