Washington. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has opened an investigation against OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT, for violating consumer protection rules and providing false information. OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, a model based on artificial intelligence (AI), last year. Since then, this chatbot has been a constant topic of discussion among people. However, during this time questions have also been raised regarding some information released on ChatGPT. Meanwhile, the FTC has sent a 20-page notice to OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, asking it to respond to a number of issues.

The notice sought detailed information on AI technology, products, consumers, privacy safeguards and data protection provisions. An FTC spokeswoman would not comment Thursday on the opening of the investigation against OpenAI. According to a report published in the American newspaper The Washington Post, the FTC is investigating whether OpenAI is adopting unfair or deceptive practices of privacy or data security or harming the interests of consumers. Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, expressed his dismay in a tweet when reports of the investigation began. The move will not help in building confidence but the company will work closely with the trade commission, he added.

“It’s important to us that technology is safe and consumer-friendly, and we make sure we follow the law,” Altman said in a tweet. We protect user privacy and build our systems to learn about the world, not private individuals.” Earlier in May, Altman appeared before the US Congress. Apart from this, he has also traveled to European countries and India and advocated regulation on AI. In fact, voices have been raised about the rapidly growing use of ChatGPT and some other AI solutions and their potential dangers.
