West Indies Cricket: Sehwag wraps up everyone after West Indies’ exit from the World Cup, disappointment among Indian cricketers

New Delhi: Former India opener Virender Sehwag blamed the West Indies team’s dismal show on regional politics in the West Indies cricket set-up, while the Indian cricket fraternity expressed sadness and disappointment over the team’s exit from the ODI World Cup qualifiers. The West Indies team, which has been in a state of disrepair of late, was once again disappointed when the team was knocked out of the ICC ODI World Cup to be held in India from October 5 to November 19 after a defeat against Scotland in the World Cup Qualifier.Sehwag During this, he advocated good team management and a politics-free association. Sehwag tweeted, ‘What a shame. West Indies failed to qualify for the World Cup. It shows that talent alone is not enough, there is need of concentration and good team management which is free from politics. The only consolation is that there is no scope for further downfall from here.

West Indies had also faced defeat against Zimbabwe and Netherlands earlier. This means that the world champion of 1975 and 1979 will not be a part of the tournament for the first time in its 48-year history. Madan Lal, a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, said players should be held accountable for preferring to play in T20 franchise leagues around the world.

Madanlal tweeted, ‘Sad to see that West Indies could not qualify for the World Cup 2023. It is his own fault as he is only interested in T20 league. There is no pride in playing for the country. Former Test opener batsman and now commentator Aakash Chopra termed it disappointing but he is not surprised by it. Chopra tweeted, ‘West Indies team out of the World Cup. This is not surprising given the decline in their standards over the years.
He said, ‘It is still a bit disappointing that the former champion of cricket will be just a spectator in the world competition. Change is the only constant. Since winning the T20 World title in 2012 and 2016, West Indies’ performance has declined. They also failed to make it to the 2017 Champions Trophy. The team finished ninth out of 10 teams in the 2019 World Cup while the team finished eighth out of nine teams in the World Test Championship 2019–21 and 2021–23 cycles.

In the T20 World Cup 2021, the West Indies team could win only one match, whereas in the last World Cup, the team was out of the first stage. Sehwag’s opening partner Gambhir believes that the Caribbean team will again reach the top.

Gambhir tweeted, ‘I love West Indies. I love West Indies cricket. I still think they can become the number one team in world cricket. Former India opener Wasim Jaffer tweeted, ‘Disappointing that West Indies will not be a part of the World Cup. Caribbean cricket has officially bottomed out. But when you are at the bottom, you can only go up.’
