Klaasen also played a brilliant innings
Heinrich Klaasen hit three fours and a six in 32 runs in 20 balls and David Miller hit three fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 39 runs in 21 balls. Taking full advantage of the favorable pitch against a weak and flawed Sri Lankan bowling line-up, the South African batsmen batted at a high scoring rate to gain control in the middle overs.
Captain Temba Bavuma was out after scoring 8 runs.
The initial blow came when Dilshan Madushanka pinned Temba Bavuma (8) in front of the wicket. But that was the only moment of happiness for the Sri Lankan people. De Kock and Van der Dussen made the fourth highest partnership for any wicket for South Africa in the World Cup and left the field with their team in a strong position.
De Kock will retire after the World Cup
De Kock, who was ready to retire from ODI after the tournament, was looking in the mood to score a century from the beginning. On the other hand, Van der Dussen celebrated his 50th ODI career with the fifth century of his career. During this, he hit 13 fours and two sixes. Markram opened with two powerful straight drives off Madushanka for four runs, breaking the record set by Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien (100 off 50 balls) in 2011.
Dusen got life support
Van der Dussen survived a close chance on 65 when an errant shot fell too close to Sadira Samarawickrama. He was standing at short midwicket. He reacted a little late and missed the catch. With no turn for the Sri Lankan spinners, the South African batsmen made no mistakes in taking the ball across the boundary in the middle overs. In overs between 19 and 29, 85 runs were scored with the help of 11 fours and two sixes.
Dunith Velalage did not go
Dunith Velalage bowled five consecutive dot balls to right-handed Van der Dussen in the 26th over. Due to which the batsman was forced to try to make the shot. While attempting a reverse-sweep, the ball reached the air near Pathum Nissanka. But the ball missed Nissanka’s hands. In the 29th over, another chance to break the partnership was wasted when a mix-up between De Kock and Van der Dussen could have left both batsmen vulnerable to run-outs.
